Scenting Nosferatu (1922)
Conceived and scent-directed by Jas Brooks (Snivure), this special edition reawakens F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922) through the dimension of smell. A bespoke foil-printed scratch-and-sniff card bearing ten custom scents forms a complete olfactory track for the film. Each numbered circle corresponds to a precise narrative moment: Ellen’s lilacs, Hutter’s leather, the stench of Orlock’s cursed earth, and the stagnant breath of plague-bearing rats.
The design amplifies the film’s sinister progression, underscoring the contrast between Ellen (aligned with light and nature) and Orlock (embodiment of darkness and decay). Scents appear not only in moments of horror, but also in moments of intimacy, drawing audiences into the uncanny bond between Ellen and Orlock.
Premiered in 2023, the Scented Edition has since accompanied sold-out screenings in Chicago, Sydney, and New Zealand. One attendee described the experience as “absolutely incredible… from heavenly blossoms to the stagnant stench of the Black Death.”
